Raised up in a Christian environment, gospel music was Bernard's first exposure to the music world. Because his father was the pianist at two churches in Murfreesboro, TN, practicing or rehearsing was instilled in him at the age of 4. However, his passion or music grew stronger when at the age of 9 he became the drummer at the church where his mom is still currently a member.
While attending MTSU in pursuit of a BS degree in Audio Production, Bernard began to network with other fellow students, who also had a passion to become professional musicians, which pushed him to dig deeper into becoming a better drummer. But it was not until Bernard was reacquainted with up and coming smooth jazz artist (keys/drummer), Tyronn Hamilton and introduced to one of Atlanta's producer/musical director, Tyrus Sass, and one of the most gifted musician/singer/songwriter, Michael Hicks; that he would soon become a better musician and not just a drummer. One of his strong points as a drummer is his creativeness O manipulate acoustic drums to sound of such that a person would ordinarily hear from a sampler or drum machine being produced on live drums with no triggers. Bernard is also known for his pocket grooves and his approach to the meaning of the word "dynamics". In other words, being heard without being heard or as some would say, "I can actually hear what the artist is singing as well as the groove!" And in taking this approach, Bernard has the privilege and honor.of playing for various artists whom are signed and are independent.
He has played for various artists such as gospel recording artist Angela Spivey, Lemme Batties, and Loraine Brown. Other signed artist Bernard has had the privilege of playing for is jazz artists such as: Jeff Lorber, Alex Buyon, and Frank McComb. He has toured with R&B artists Christopher Williams and Chico Debarge. He has also been honored to play for a host of Indie artists such as: Darnell Levine, one of Nashville's hottest Indie band Mike Hicks and the Func Puncs (God bless you sir, for giving me the opportunity), The Light, Micheal Inge, The Don Adams Band, Christ Fellowship Chorale, Joint Heirs, the Marable Twins, and Chantae Cann. Bernard He has aiso toured with the stage play, "The Clean Up Woman." He has also toured with another stage play, "Cheaper to Keep Her "(starring Vivica Fox and Brian McKnight) Bernard has tracked drums for many independent artists here in Nashville and plays drums for a few Cover bands. One of the bands being Nashville's funkiest dance bands, Sam Mocrary and The Mixl 'As musicians, because we have been blessed with such gifts from God, we should never take them for granted! So each opportunity we get to display our gift, we need to honor and cherish it!"--- Bernard Bell
